The Staves - Live at Llanthony

The Priory's beautiful gardens and waterside setting in the heart of Gloucester's quayside make for a truly perfect arena for the band’s signature sound.
Come on down for festival vibes, incredible music, great beer and food, all in an unforgettable setting. The event has an intimate festival feel, promising powerful performances in one of Gloucester’s finest historic sites.
Taking a cue from youthful folk revivalists like Laura Marling, Mountain Man, and the Pierces, Watford, England’s the Staves blend the wistful cadences of classic British folk with breezy, Laurel Canyon-era pop. They made their full-length debut with Dead & Born & Grown in 2012. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon produced the follow-up, 2015’s lf I Was, and 2021’s Good Woman saw them work with producer John Congleton on a set partly inspired by both loss and childbirth.
The trio formed in 2009 around the talents of sisters Emily (vocals), Jessica (vocals/guitar), and Camilla Staveley-Taylor (vocals/ukulele), who first learned to harmonise by singing along with their parents’ record collection, dominated by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Emily was only 14 years old when the siblings made their live debut at a neighbourhood pub’s open-mike night, but they were well-received and began appearing on a regular basis. The Staves released their debut EP, Facing West, in 2010, the same year they performed as backing vocalists on Tom Jones’ 2010 gospel collection Praise & Blame
The band’s 4th album All Now emerges, bold and bright, from a period of quiet, which followed a period of chaos, for the band. When Good Woman was released in 2021, to positive reviews, it felt like “an echoing silence” to share such a cathartic album with a world shut down. So The Staves had to retreat, again, and actually wrestle with everything they had been through.
The result? An album as rich and honest as all the most profound music by The Staves scattered across albums for the last decade, calcified here into something special. There’s the buoyant nostalgia on ‘After School’, a love letter to Emily from her little sisters “looking back on the simpler times” and reflecting on those teenage days shuffling into that one bedroom with the CD player to play the new Sheryl Crow album.
