Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) plays Irish author and dramatist Samuel Beckett in Oscar-winning director James Marsh’s (The Theory of Everything) sweeping account of his fascinating life. A Parisian bon vivant, World War II resistance fighter, innovative and daring Nobel Prize-winning writer, philandering husband and recluse, Beckett lived a storied and exceptional life. In Marsh’s playful film, it’s explored through Beckett’s mistakes and fraught relationships with wife Suzanne (Sandrine Bonnaire), his lover Barbara Bray (Maxine Peake) and fellow Irish modernist James Joyce (Aidan Gillen).
