Dir: Sasha Nathwani | UK | 2024 | 100 mins
Cast | Deba Hekmat, Narges Rashidi, Solly McLeod, Denzel Baidoo
On A-level results day, Ziba (Deba Hekmat) holds her breath. Keen to study astrophysics at university, she’s equally determined to make the first day of her adult life one to remember. But when her tight-knit group of friends are joined in a cross-London all-day party by newcomer Malcolm (Denzel Baidoo), she must reckon with a darker truth.
Boasting a wonderful performance from Hekmat (who also gave a terrific supporting turn in Luna Carmoon’s recent Hoard) Last Swim’s plot has plenty of high-stakes elements, but never strays into melodrama, aided by Hekmat and the rest of its impressive young cast. First-time director Sasha Nathwani’s sweet-natured, heartfelt film captures a day full of significance that will live on in nostalgia, in the life of a young woman on the cusp of adulthood.
